LAKELAND — Padgett Elementary students shared their science and math lab Thursday with some visitors — a dozen robots.

Outreach instructors with the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa taught fifth-graders to program LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robots to move, avoid running into things and “talk.”

The instructors will teach classes in 15 low-income schools in Lakeland, Winter Haven, Auburndale, Eagle Lake, Davenport, Fort Meade and Mulberry over the next couple months using a $13,000 George W. Jenkins grant from the GiveWell Community Foundation.

Each school will get a one-day visit from the instructors, with third to fifth-grade classes getting hour-long sessions to learn and play with the robots.
