WINTER HAVEN — Martha Santiago holds many firsts: the first generation of her family to graduate high school and college, the first Hispanic woman principal in the Polk County School District and the first Hispanic woman to run for Polk County Commission.

The provost of Polk State College’s Winter Haven campus, Lake Wales centers and Northeast Polk satellite location, is the first Hispanic woman to hold that position, too.

“I’m in the business of changing lives through education,” Santiago said. “I’m a product of that because when I went to school, my whole family tree changed.”
